Hundreds of choices we make each day impact our environment. Sometimes big decisions, sometimes something as small as changing your toothbrush. Few of us think twice when we need to replace our toothbrush, but consider this...

In New Zealand, over 6 million toothbrushes are disposed of each year, which creates something like 200 tonnes of plastic waste - which won't break down in our lifetime, or that of our children. But for good dental hygiene, we need to replace our toothbrushes regularly, so what to do?

Invented by a Brisbane dentist, this toothbrush is a simple solution to the quandary. Made from Moso bamboo, a natural cellulose fibre, it's biodegradable, environmentally sustainable, and does not pollute the environment. Technically considered a member of the grass family, bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth, and is incredibly abundant. It regenerates itself prolifically with minimal water and without the need for harmful pesticides - in fact harvesting and using the bamboo helps to control unwanted spread into agricultural and natural forest areas.

The bamboo for these toothbrushes are grown by small farmers (i.e not on plantations) in China. During manufacture the handle is heat treated to carbonise the surface, giving it a quality finish and good service life, providing water resistance and preventing the growth of bacteria and mould during normal use. The bristles are made from a degradable BPA-free polymer resistant to microbial growth, to ensure safety and durability. The packaging is bio-degradable.

For best results, most dentists recommend you replace your toothbrush at least every three months. These bamboo toothbrushes have been test-driven for over 8 months by Ni staff in New Zealand and Australia, so yes they last (but we don't suggest you do that). We do recommend you rinse and dry your toothbrush after use to keep it clean.
